Katie Kaufmann

Therapist - Intern

If you find yourself at odds with the status quo and are grappling with big picture issues while also seeking practical solutions required to survive and/or thrive in the present and work towards living a more meaningful and authentic existence, then perhaps I could be of service. I truly enjoy helping clients embrace parts of themselves that society dismisses and deems “weird or different”. As a queer-identified practitioner, my scope of practice includes LGBTQ+ issues, anxiety, depression, childhood and intergenerational trauma, existential overwhelm, navigating non-traditional life trajectories and career paths, improving relationships and boundaries, and the exploration of identities. Whether you’re dealing with existential dread, relationship issues, work stress, unresolved trauma, chronic mental health conditions, life transitions or simply feeling stuck - I am here for you.

My practice is generally founded upon an existential-humanistic framework, however, I also tend to draw from interpersonal neurobiology, attachment, systems, and critical theories and frequently integrate cognitive behavioral and emotion-focused interventions. I work from a trauma informed, anti-racist, anti-oppression, pro-disability justice, body neutral, queer-friendly, strengths based perspective. My personal style is conversational, friendly, unpretentious, and empathetically straight forward with a dash of playful irreverence as I help you explore, challenge, and confront the harmful narratives and unhelpful behaviors that are holding you back from being your authentic self, connecting with others, and/or finding meaning and fulfillment in this crazy world.

As a practical matter, I am in my final year of obtaining my Master’s in Clinical Social Work at The University of Maryland, Baltimore, with an expected graduation date of May 2025. I have 10+ years experience working in direct service with diverse client populations. I will be fully supervised in my capacity as an intern while practicing at Takoma Therapy.

I am passionate about creative problem solving, compassionate honesty, and appropriate doses of therapeutic levity. I strive to foster a supportive therapeutic dynamic based on trust, non-hierarchical collaboration, and authenticity while centering client agency and consent as we delve into complex issues with humor and empathy.
